Brother’s Lullaby
solo violin
duration: 3′ 30″
“Brother’s Lullaby” was adapted from a movement of the song cycle,”A Year to the Day,” written in 2022 along with librettist Mark Campbell and commissioned by The Violin Channel with support from The Alphadyne Foundation for tenor Nicholas Phan, violinist Augustin Hadelich, cellist Karen Ouzounian and pianist Orion Weiss.
Program Notes:
“Brother’s Lullaby” emerged out of memories of my brother, David Ilmar Beecher, practicing violin in the room next to mine on so many nights of my childhood. I remember this experience with joy, even if I might not have always felt it in the moment, and I think my often unpredictable, rambunctiously magical dreams were trained on David’s playing. The piece was written for and dedicated to Augustin Hadelich, with deep appreciation.
