Nobody Dies Anymore
An animation made with scratchboard, ink and pastels in 2015. Music and animation by Lembit Beecher, text by Liza Balkan, based on interviews with senior citizens living in Toronto and Vermont. Commissioned and premiered by Scrag Mountain Music, featuring Mary Bonhag, soprano, in June 2014 “Nobody Dies Anymore” is the second movement of “Looking at Spring,” a song cycle which uses interviews with senior citizens living in Vermont and Toronto as the basis for an exploration of the many facets of aging. In preparing the text for the songs, librettist Liza Balkan culled short poems out of these conversations, often focusing on unexpected, beautiful and humorous details of life, but also grappling with larger questions of mortality, loss and self-discovery.
